A Cartouche is an oblong enclosure with a horizontal line at the bottom indicating that the text enclosed is a royal name. It was derived from the French expression for an oval frame. Inside the cartouche the Egyptians placed the names of their rulers or gods and goddesses, along with symbols and protective shapes. Hence most cartouches symbolize the strength of royal power.

The Pharaoh Tutankhamen represented the unity of Egypt (Lower and Upper Egypt) and it is his head that is represented in this Cartouche with the sacred Scarab providing her protection and power. The Cartouche is topped with the Lotus representing purity, long life and good health. In royal regalia Upper Egypt was represented by the white crown and Lower Egypt by the red crown. Each crown was related to a goddess – Nekhbet the vulture (Upper Egypt) and Wadjyt the cobra (Lower Egypt). Kings wore these symbols on their brows to protect them from their enemies.
