Cartouche with Protective Wings of Isis

A Cartouche is an oblong enclosure with a horizontal line at the bottom indicating that the text enclosed is a royal name. It was derived from the French expression for an oval frame. Inside the cartouche the Egyptians placed the names of their rulers or gods and goddesses, along with symbols and protective shapes. Hence most cartouches symbolize the strength of royal power.

Isis, portrayed with outstretched wings holding the cartouche, symbolizes the protection she offers against sickness, death, black magic, curses and spells. The image of her wings was built into the thrones of the Pharaohs, aiding in keeping them righteous & protected.
